Teaching and training to share our knowledge
Dr Stanford is committed to teaching and holds weekly student tutorials at POWH for students enrolled at UNSW. These are very popular; he has previously won best teacher award at the Prince of Wales Clinical School and in 2017 the Clinical School prize for long term service to teaching. He delivers regular lectures at the undergraduate course in medicine at UNSW. He hosts overseas elective students keen to attend the orthopaedic unit at POWH.
Dr Stanford is a supervisor of training for orthopaedic registrars at POWH. He is passionate about passing on knowledge and skills to the next generation of surgeons during weekly operating sessions, ward rounds and outpatient clinics.
The complexity of caring for the elderly with orthopaedic problems requires input from specialist geriatric physicians as well as orthopaedic surgeons. Dr Stanford is involved in the integration of surgical and medical care for this group of patients at POWH. With his colleague, Prof Jacqui Close, he runs regular combined training sessions for orthopaedic and geriatric trainees.
